WINTER PRESCHOOL HIKES - 821003

Join Parks Naturalist, Shawn, for fun in the outdoors! These relaxed and playful nature programs are geared towards children ages 2 – 4. Preschool Hikes are free, and approximately 1 hour long from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Programs are held outdoors so please be sure to bring weather appropriate clothing, and sturdy shoes. Space is limited to 20 children per program.

All programs are held at County Farm Park and will meet at the Pollinator Garden (near playground).

PLEASE NOTE REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE 24 HOURS BEFORE EVENT DATE

WINTER SOLSTICE
Thursday, December 21st
This solstice, we will fill our baskets with nuts, apples, bird’s seed, and wildlife mix, and head out to the woods. We will look for little vole and mice tunnels and place a little pile here, a little pile there. We will toss bird seed in protected places for the winged ones and leave apples for the deer and the squirrels.

LIFE IN A WINTER FIELD
Thursday, January 18th
The winter fields seem so still but they are alive with rustling feet, and wind stirring the tawny grasses. If there is snow, it can tell a story of winter survival. Winter is a beautiful time, so bundle up and explore what the forests and fields have to offer.

HOW SWEET IT IS
Thursday, February 15th
Go on a hike to visit the mighty maple tree, and learn how we can use it to make a sweet treat!

WINTER JUNIOR NATURALIST - 821004

Each program session will target a different area of nature, and build an awareness of the natural world through direct observation. At the end of each program kids will receive a badge. Kids who attend four or more programs will be certified as Junior Naturalists, and receive naturalist prizes. Adult nature programs may be substituted for a Junior Naturalist program. This is a free program, but some locations do require a vehicle entry fee. Junior Naturalist is for kids 7-12 years old. SPACE IS LIMITED!! Maximum of 10 kids per program.

WHERE THE DEER TRAIL GOES
Sunday, December 3rd – 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Independence Lake County Park
Vehicle entry fee required
Learn about the life history of deer and how to identify tracks, scat, and more! We’ll hike to find signs of deer, and perhaps we’ll follow a deer trail and explore the exciting hidden places it leads! Program led by Kelsey Dehring.


BIRDS OF WINTER
Saturday, January 27th – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
County Farm Park – Field Operations Building
Learn all about winter birds, what they eat, how they stay warm and how you can create your own bird habitat. Hike to observe birds, and build a birdfeeder to take home. Bring Binoculars if you have them, a few sets will be available to borrow. This hike led by Shawn Severance.


MICHIGAN MAMMALS
Saturday, February 24h – 10:00 a.m. to Noon
Rolling Hills County Park, Meet at the Lodge
Vehicle entry fee required
We will learn to identify common – and not so common – Michigan Mammals by looking at a variety of skulls, pelts, and teeth. An indoors investigation will be followed by a short hike outdoors to look for tracks, scat and signs. This program led by Shawn Severance.
