WINTER JUNIOR NATURALIST - 821004

Each program session will target a different area of nature, and build an awareness of the natural world through direct observation. At the end of each program kids will receive a badge. Kids who attend four or more programs will be certified as Junior Naturalists, and receive naturalist prizes. Adult nature programs may be substituted for a Junior Naturalist program. This is a free program, but some locations do require a vehicle entry fee. Junior Naturalist is for kids 7-12 years old. SPACE IS LIMITED!! Maximum of 10 kids per program.

WHERE THE DEER TRAIL GOES
Sunday, December 3rd – 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Independence Lake County Park
Vehicle entry fee required
Learn about the life history of deer and how to identify tracks, scat, and more! We’ll hike to find signs of deer, and perhaps we’ll follow a deer trail and explore the exciting hidden places it leads! Program led by Kelsey Dehring.


BIRDS OF WINTER
Saturday, January 27th – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
County Farm Park – Field Operations Building
Learn all about winter birds, what they eat, how they stay warm and how you can create your own bird habitat. Hike to observe birds, and build a birdfeeder to take home. Bring Binoculars if you have them, a few sets will be available to borrow. This hike led by Shawn Severance.


MICHIGAN MAMMALS
Saturday, February 24h – 10:00 a.m. to Noon
Rolling Hills County Park, Meet at the Lodge
Vehicle entry fee required
We will learn to identify common – and not so common – Michigan Mammals by looking at a variety of skulls, pelts, and teeth. An indoors investigation will be followed by a short hike outdoors to look for tracks, scat and signs. This program led by Shawn Severance.

SPRING PRESCHOOL HIKES - 831003

Join Parks Naturalist, Shawn, for fun in the outdoors! These relaxed and playful nature programs are geared towards children ages 2 – 4. Preschool Hikes are free, and approximately 1 hour long from 10:00 to 11:00 am. A caregiver must be present. Programs are held outdoors so please be sure to bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent, weather appropriate clothing, and sturdy shoes. Space is limited to 15 children per program.

All programs are held at County Farm Park, and specific meeting places will be stated in program description.

COUNTING ON GREEN

The vernal equinox is here and little secret green sprouts and shoots are just starting to burst out of the earth. Go on a hike to search for all things green. At the end of our hike we’ll use our green treasures to make a lucky sun catcher to take home.

Spring is here and the forest is coming alive. Make a spring wand and go on a hike to wake up the seedlings and flower buds and welcome the season of new beginnings.

Spring has sprung and the forest is putting on a show! Use all five senses to experience the new life, color, and joys of spring. We will gather treasures and make a spring shadow box.

FINDING FOSSILS

Take a glimpse into a world from long ago. We’ll visit an old gravel pit where we will be able to find signs of prehistoric plants and animals. Please note, depending on weather leading up to event, areas may be muddy. Program led by Kelsey Dehring.

SECRETS OF THE VERNAL POOL
Saturday, April 21st – 10:30 to noon
Miller-Smith Preserve
As leafy woodland hollows fill with meltwater, the forest comes alive with songs of springtime. Who lives here? Where do they go in the summer when these pools fade away? Dip in the pool and get a first-hand look at the unique creatures of the vernal pool. Waterproof boots recommended. Program led by Shawn Severance.

JUNIOR NATURALIST: STEWARDSHIP

Scio Woods Preserve
An important part of being a naturalist is stewardship. Join Naturalist Kelsey Dehring as she teaches you how to identify invasive plant species, and help her improve the forest by removing them. Gloves will be provided.

Learn all you need to know to make maple syrup at home. We will talk about tree identification, timing and techniques of tapping your trees, cooking the sap and more! If the sap is running, we will tap trees and collect. Shawn Severance leads this program.

Program is geared towards adults and older children.

Snowshoe Clinic - IL431322

WCPARC is partnering with REI for this great opportunity to learn about snowshoes and to try them out! REI snowshoe specialists will be onsite to educate about the equipment, followed by a snowshoe hike led by park naturalists.
